Getzen Jimmy Pankow Model Trombone

Post by dukesboneman »

I know these were made briefly, but I`ve never seen one come up for sale.
What was wrong with them?
Same with the Marcinkiewicz Trombones. I tried 3 of them once a couple years ago and one was good, one was great and the 3rd was freaking amazing. But I never see them up for sale

Those Getzens were from quite a few years before Getzen started the Edwards division of the company, and the company's reputation wasn't the best. There were a few instruments that had their fans, like the Doc Severensen trumpet, but it took the success of the Edwards instruments, and the quality that they transferred from those to their Getzen line of trombones for them to start selling any quantity of trombones. I've also wondered about those horns when I saw them advertised. Pankow went to his Yamaha a couple of years later, so maybe it didn't resonate for him either?

I think the Marcinkiewicz trombones were very rare - I've seen a couple of trumpets but only pictures of the trombones. His mouthpieces were very popular in this area for a while.

Getzen didn't start Edwards; in effect, Edwards (actually Allied Music Corporation, which was owned by Tom and Ed Getzen and was building Edwards instruments) bought what was left of Getzen out of bankruptcy.

But your point as to the state of the Getzen Company in the 1980's is spot on; things were not going well (as evidenced by the company's eventual bankruptcy sale in 1991).
