Interesting Bach 9 Megatone

Post by HawaiiTromboneGuy »

Saw this sitting on eBay for awhile and decided to purchase from Mouthpiece Express. I have a nice MV 9 that I used to use before switching to AR. I played megatones throughout high school ages ago and they recently tickled my fancy again. I don’t usually jive with gold plated mouthpieces as they tend to feel a little too slippery to me, but the interest got the best of me and alas I now have this.

Anyone have any idea why they’d do something like this? Granted the listing did mention about it being “customized” in house. Just curious as to the thought process of doing so?

It does appear to be threaded, but the space between the threads don’t appear to be for something to screw on to?

There was something similar that Doug Yeo did with the prototype mouthpieces he made with Yamaha.

It could be that the outside of the original rim had a deep scrape or gouge in it and the owner couldn’t stand the aesthetics of it. They probably got started with trying to create a design that removed or hid the gouge and got a little carried away with it.
