Looking for more info on old Conn 78H

According to Conn loyalist page the 78H was introduced in 1921/22 and discontinued in 1928 with # 3 1/2 bore. (.517)?
Then re instated in 1932 with #3 3/4 bore (.522).

The serial # on mine shows it made in 1929. Supposedly they weren't made that year.


It has a rose brass 8 inch bell. Nickel inner slide. Brass outer slide.
I don't have anything to measure the bore with so It's either a .517 bore or .522 bore.

can any Conn experts here add any insight to this.

I have a 1926 78h. I found new old stock chrome plate inner slides years ago and had the slide rebuilt. If my outer slide had a smaller bore size, the newer inners probably would have been too tight or might not have fit at all and that's certainly was not the case. The bore is .522 and fit was good.

Conn Loyalist is a very good site but not perfect. Most of the definitive info from that period is lost and people have tried to piece it together from various sources. I believe they created this chart by comparing which trombone models were offered in which years. But not sure if they actually had catalogues for every single year. What's more Conn was known to offer many options and even models that didn't appear in catalogues.
The site Saxophone.org has a lot of conn catalogues scanned but doesn't have one for 1929.

Conn was know to do things that don't add up and I happen to own one myself - a 1972 80H which is a .522 slide like a 78H and an 8" red brass bell. According to ConnLoyalist the 80H was not even on the radar in 1972 and yet I have one. It is what it is in spite of not being any record of such a horn being built in 1972.

As you suggested in a reply on another thread—yes, that is the horn I had a few years ago.

I thought it was a good player, but I realized I just don’t get along with Conns as well as I’d like. The barrels are so short, I was constantly playing flat. I traded it to Doug and got a Mt Vernon Bach 36 he had at the time.
