Advice on picking up the trombone again

Post by AnaB »

Hello! I played for around 10 years and reached about 7th Grade AMEB (for those australians out there) - played in a bunch of big bands and orchestras. I then had my trombone stolen after a gig and ended up quitting - it's now been 10 years since I've picked up the trombone and I'm looking at buying a new one.

Trying to figure out what models I should be looking at - looking to use it in my work as an actor musician so would like it to be pretty versatile but probably an edgier sound.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Someone was selling a King 3B with F valve on here for about $850, that‘s where I‘d start. You could get a cheaper straight horn but since you mention versatility the 3B/F can do most things very well.

In your position I‘d budget for a few lessons also.

Thank you! Very useful suggestion. I will definitely be adding quite a few lessons in to get me started.

You‘re welcome.

I do have to correct myself, it was $800, not $850, here‘s the thread I had in mind:

Good luck with your return!

It's interesting, I have a friend I taught lessons to that was an improv actor that thought it'd be funny to pick up trombone again to use in her work. She now lives in NY and seems to be doing well, and plays in community bands out there. And I believe she's still taking lessons with a friend of mine.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with any small bore trombone. I always recommend the same 4 companies; Bach, Conn, King or Yamaha. IMO you're going to get the most versatility out of a King 3bf as listed above.

And if budget is an issue, there's nothing wrong with those brands beginner models. I'm personally a fan of the Yamaha YSL-354 (ysl 200ad) or the King 606 (or smaller version, 605).

I found it came back pretty quickly on my way back in after not playing for 15 years…

The 3b or 3b/f is a strong choice…I’ve also heard that the Yamaha YSL-456 is a pretty well rounded instrument and may be worth a look as it has the f attachment which may add to the versatility…

If budget is a concern and you’re looking for something that can take a lot of edge and holds together really well, I would definitely suggest the King Tempo with the nickel plated bell. I have one of the older models with the 2b style curved front brace…it is a downright awesome horn for the price point.
