Cutting tuning slide

Hello!

I have question about cutting the tuning slide on my Bach bass trombone. There are some small rings that are right at the edge of the outer part where the tuning slide goes in. Cutting will result in the removal of these rings. Do you think this will affect sound at all?

You can torch the rings off, then have them put on the cut part.

Or you can remove from the ferrule and trim the already trimmed edge to make it shorter and not have to re-align the ring and add the chamfer (slightly easier if your tools are limited to saw and torch).

Or you can order those rings separately.

Or you can just ignore them.

I’ve got examples of all four of those methods here in my house right now. Ignoring and timing the already trimmed edge are leading the clubhouse right now.

Good techs will typically remove them and then re-fit them.

That's how I like to do it. Take the whole tube out of the ferrule. Then I trim it on the lathe and get a perfect edge. Then solder it back in. I normally don't have to take the ring off at all. No chance of an uneven cut or crooked ring.

Another benefit to that method.. take apart that bell stem/ferrule/tuning slide joint and clean everything up. That joint has had some of the most ridiculous gaps I have ever seen out of some factories hidden under that ferrule.

I swear it looks like some of those stems were trimmed to length on a bandsaw while the stem and rim were both resting on the table (at a huge angle to where the cut SHOULD be).
