Trombone Comparison?

Post by BGuttman »

I just wasted 11 minutes of my life watching this:

How do you use something like this to help somebody choose a trombone? It's like comparing a fruit bowl to find the best fruit.

Another great example of Chat GPT AI? Even the voice seems synthesized!

There are similar (and similarly useless) comparisons of many other products in the Interweb.

Thanks for the heads-up, Bruce. I'll save the precious 11 minutes out of my busy Friday afternoon!

I'm sorry for your loss of those 11 minutes, but I'm very grateful for the heads-up.

In my experience do those who post these utterly stupid videos have financial motives for putting out that rubbish. Either it's advertising revenues from the site's general advertisers, or it's sponsored financing from an instrument builder, or they get paid by an agency to produce a favourable presentation of a brand just for the agency's sake (though this is rare).

Today it seems like the most important thing is to say something and anything to get attention whatsoever, rather than having a content, a meaning or a purpose. This is why I stay away from YouTube as much as possible.

Woe is me. Of course, once you posted this, I had to see how bad it was. Now I've wasted my own 11 minutes. Not only is it basically worthless, but even worse it is misleading and full of misinformation. A huge disservice to the trombone community.

Bruce, would you be so kind as to give us a synopsis so no one else is tempted to view the video just to see what you're talking about?

I can't. I haven't seen so many errors or inapt comparisons since I read an AI legal brief.

I made it through one minute. I got to the shot that makes it look as though the horn comes pre-dented and stopped.

Ten trombones "compared". 5 are Cheap Chinese, Bach 42B, 3 Yamahas (354, 882O, and 822 Bass) and one "alto in Bb" (pronounced "Bee-Bee"). No sound samples of any. Frankly, I actually owned one of the Cheap Chinese horns, and I'd never consider trading my Yamaha 682; or even a 354, for it.

You will get very similar results if you search for “best trombones” or “high quality trombones” on the Internet. It’s hilarious how Mendini and Eastar get mixed in with the legitimate professional models. Gee…….I wonder what companies are making these lists?

These eleven minutes become increasingly urgent when one compares them to "remaining lifetime".
