Info on Leblanc trombone

Post by texascurt »

Hey guys, I recently picked up this Leblanc Paris trombone, serial number 8899. I can't find ANY information online about them, and no photos of similar trombones which is unusual. The horn is built solidly and plays extraordinarily well, and is definitely not a beginner grade instrument. It feels comparable in quality/fit/finish to more modern professional horns. It has a 7-1/2" bell and (I think) a .490 bore (my cheap Amazon digital calipers aren't too accurate).

The bell stamp, and medallion image on the counterweight, looks identical to the late 1950's-early 1960's Leblanc trumpets I saw on the brasshistory.net site. I emailed Jim (Brass History site owner) to see if he had any info. The only other stamps on the horn are "G Leblanc, Paris" and the serial number.

I thought perhaps it was made by Couesnon, as were many other Leblanc instruments of that era, but it doesn't have features similar to the Couesnon trombones of that period that I've seen.

I also have the original case, which is a VERY nice heavy duty luggage style case with a unique latching system.

Thanks in advance!

It could be a Selmer. I know some of their trumpets were stenciled selmer horns so I suppose they could've had trombones as well. Although the slide receiver screw is reminiscent of olds

Either King or Olds; the nut is more in the style of King than Olds.

Probably made by Courtois. The factory stared after the turn of the century by George Leblanc was a woodwind maker, notably of clarinets. I think that the Leblanc (and Noblet) stamped trumpets and trombones were made for them by Courtois.
