Conn 100H

So, I am wondering, are the 100H's made in the mid-1980's better horns? I ask because I have read that, aside from the 100H actually made by Minick himself, many players fond of the Elkhart era 4H-6H do not care for the more modern 100H at all.

What was the first production year for this model from Conn, and were those made in say 1986 perhaps of a more acceptable quality?

I've has a couple of them. I think they are really nice horns. I just didn't like the balance. Too front heavy for me. One well known player who still plays one is Ira Nepus. He's a west cost guy.

I can't say anything about different generations of the 100h, just about the one - and I currently cannot look uo when it was built.
It's a good instrument, mechanically not perfect, but not due to it's original build.
Through the leadpipes it is very much adaptable, but remains an extremely light instrument.
Very very quick and easy response, nice bright sound.
However I settled on the 6h as I preferred its beefier and to me deeper sound.
For me the 6h is much more allround. Have played it recently on a demanding bigband gig on lead and it worked well.
But if you look for a very light smallbore, the 100h might be just right!
