Are Bach shop cards still avail?

Post by baroquetrombone »

It seemed like they were doing it again when I looked into it, but I've gotten no response to an email sent on 4 July. It's not a huge deal I guess, but I have two NY trombones and it would be cool to see the cards if possible.

The Bach shop cards made a lot more sense when Bach was still a small shop and a lot of their work was custom. Now they have some different options but they are all standard choices. If you look at the old shop cards, they list things like tighter and looser valve tolerances (for trumpets) and non-standard choices of materials. Now, all of the choices seem to be from a small menu, and they usually make not of those choices on the bells or slides (G for gold brass for instance).

They don't do shop cards for modern horns, but you can request the originals for New York and perhaps Mt Vernon instruments.

Andy Lott, who had been managing that left Bach recently. He had made an email address for requesting them AND a standard for how to request it… if you don’t include a picture of you pointing at the serial number, they wouldn’t act on it. Note that they get dozens of requests a day and it is just a side task for somebody that has actual duties to do making horns.

I don’t know who, if anybody, is actively managing that these days for Bach.

Ohhhh. I didn't realize that he had left. I suppose that explains it. I sent my photo with the serial number and info exactly the right way, but didn't get anything back. If nobody's checking that email address anymore, I suppose it doesn't matter. Too bad- it's such a great resource.

He’s still around and active on FB forums and not completely removed from Bach.. there’s some relationship there, just not a Full Time Employee on site. Reach out to him there and he can probably point you in the right direction.

Andy is still signed on with Bach as a consultant for trumpet development. Jeff Christiana took over Andy's post as High Brass Product Manager for Conn-Selmer. The shop card service was Andy's project and it's not too surprising that it wasn't handed off when he left.

Any chance Bach would let someone archive all of the shop cards and make them public? I don't know if there's any identifying info on them but that seems like it would be a nice thing to have and if it doesn't cost Bach anything to do...

I’ve offered to do it even privately for them to make it easier and more automated. As well as even give them a confidential database of the information contained on the trombone cards.

I wondered that too. Hell, if it's just a matter of scanning and uploading, gimme. I'll do it. There aren't THAT many.

There must be some reason to not make it public though, since Andy required a pic of the owner pointing to the serial number.

I mean, if I were their legal counsel, I’d probably look at this and say eh…. Maybe not.

But just to know how many of what existed would be fascinating.

Hi all,

I volunteered to scan them all back in 2012. Guess what? Bach has scanned them all since then. Getting to someone with access is the trick, I actually have 3 horns I need cards for myself

Dear baroquetrombone and ithinknot (or anyone else who can help out):
Where is this resource/where do I send an email to get a shop card? I too have a NY Bach, and would love to try to get a shop card. Thank you!
