GETZEN 3508 SLIDE SIZES

Post by henrysa »

I bought a wonderful Getzen 3508 with a custom Kanstul Copper bell. Plays like butter. I'm in love. My tech, while cleaning the horn measured the slide. 500 on both sides. Did Getzen commonly make 500s both? Or did he measure wrong and it is really a 500 508 dual bore. How can the naked eye tell? Seems like 1.6% would be in discernable.

The Getzen 3508 is a .500/.508 dual bore horn - available with either yellow or red bell (7.75"). I am pretty sure that the specs are available on the Getzen site.

Yes specs were readily available and not in question. The caliper measurements made are. Gotta try the slide on both ways to confirm.

One modification (i.e., the Kanstul bell) might make one wonder if there are any others (i.e., a single bore .500" slide).

Now I'm really anxious to know if the slide goes on both ways.

Mystery solved. The slide fits in both ways. 500 500 I assume. It does say P25 on the slide. Anyone know what that means?

This "Frankenhorn" may have components made by Getzen, but it's no longer a Getzen 3508 - whose distinguishing features are a super-slick dual-bore (0.500"/0.508") slide and a beautiful yellow brass (3508Y) or red brass (3508R) bell. In any case, I bet it's a wonderful, expressive trombone. Congratulations. :good:

Makes me wish there was a "23 and me" for trombones. Whoever put it together made a wonderful horn. Just curious about the lineage of things I put my mouth on. A 70 year old can always dream!

If it had a Kantsul bell, how do you know it was a 3508? That is where they stamp the model number.
The P25 is just a batch number to keep the two slide parts together during manufacture.

Getzen did make a .500 bore horn as well at one time - I think it was more of a student model, but I remember playing one in a music store and thinking that it played pretty well. Maybe the slide is from one of those horns - not sure they make them anymore, and I don't know the model number. Maybe the seller just assumed it was a 3508 because that's the current model they are selling?

Points well taken. Well I don't. That's how it was represented to me. From a well known trombone chat member, who was selling multiple instruments for the widow of a well-respected musician. I did bring up origin questions to the seller, he had made many assumptions himself. Would love to know for sure, but absent hard evidence, I am now content to enjoy what comes out the other end, repeat the beautiful story about the player and the horn, and wonder if I can eventually do justice to both.

I bet it’s a stock 1550. May have a Getzen leadpipe? Fwiw that makes it much more valuable than a Getzen.

All right! Trombone error in my favor! Either way, it's gonna fit nicely in my double-wide coffin, with my 4B on the other side.

Getzen made a 351/451 student model, .500 bore, 8” bell. The .451 had a gold brass bell, I think.

Very good student horns.

Hello,
Sorry to dig up this thread that's a few months old. Can anyone tell me if a 3508 slide would fit on the bell of a Getzen 1050? I've had my 1050 for 20 years and the slide has developed some red rot. I'm wondering if just ordering a new slide from the 3508 could improve the horn and fix it at the same time? I know the 1050 is a .508 and the 3508 is dual bore .500/.508. Which size attaches to the bell? I assume the .508 because the horn wouldn't get smaller, then bigger again... But I'm hoping those of you with more experience could confirm. Thanks!

There have been a couple past posts about a Getzen model 950 from the 70's which was discussed as being .500" bore.

I think the one I was thinking of is the 1050, which I think had a .500 bore at one point and a .508 bore at another point. I can't remember which was the earlier version vs. the later one, but I think it was considered to be more of a student line in comparison to the 3508. I'm pretty sure there was a thread on these two horns back on the old site, pre-Chat.

I thought the Eterna 1050 was a basic pro horn. Very similar to a 3B, with 8” bell, .508 bore.

Maybe it is - I don't know the Getzen small bores that well. My recollection is that there were a couple of small bore models, and over time, they dropped one model and kept making the 3508. I have played the 3508's in both red and yellow, and they are very good horns. I definitely remember some discussions about a model that at one point offered a .500 slide and at another point, they offered that horn with a .508 (just not sure which version was the earlier model). Anyway, I will freely admit to not being an expert on these models - somebody out there knows more about this.

I've got both the 1050 and the 3508r here. Both really nice horns. Both light. The 1050 is a bit more open with a single personality. The 3508r changes very much depending on what leadpipe you put in it. Goes from 2B to Shires MD+ (in my view better than a 3B) to 3B+. I'm still learning to move around mine. Yeah, the slides are interchangeable, and they fit on the 6h family as well. The larger bore connects to the bell.

Re: interchangeable slides

Huh, that’s weird. When I had both the 3508R and 1050 Eterna, the slides were not interchangeable. Maybe the 1050 I had was modded without my knowledge.

Just double checked it. Mine are interchangeable. The 3508 slide doesn't thread perfectly onto the 1050 bell, but it is secure, and it works perfectly with the 1050 slide and 3508 bell.

I think the assertion is that the slide tenons / bell receivers are all the same size, and thus interchangeable, for Getzen 1050 & Getzen 3508 (and Conn 0.500"-bore) trombones. Of course the slide outers are not interchangeable among the various slide inners, since the 3508 is 0.500"/0.508" dual-bore.

Oh, yeah, the entire slide assembly, not the outer. OP was talking about slide fitting onto the bell.

Brilliant. Thanks so much guys. Now I just need to find someone looking to part ways with their 3508 slide…. Maybe easier said than done lol. I think this would breathe new life into my 1050 which has served me well for many years.

(Ps, this is Randybone… I think I made a second account and one is on my phone and one is on my computer… I need to consolidate those.)

Absent a traumatic event, I doubt that anyone would give up a Getzen 3508 slide. The 3508 trombones are too good to part out.
