4 very different sounds, yet the blend is great.

A modern remake of the same tune with a very similar sound... the biggest difference is in the solos.

4 different sounds, but they're all getting a great core and warmth to it... makes it a lot easier to play together.

I heard yet another pro Boston big band a couple nights ago with one and four and nothing in the middle. Trumpets had one and two and nothing on the bottom. But there were people in those seats!

This may illustrate how matching brands is not so important. However, the group would likely sound lots different with a .547 on top.

That vibrato is so sweet. I'd like to here such playing today from contemporary players, but it is out of fashion. It's probably because they don't play that kind of arrangements anymore. Today the ideal is straight without vibrato. There aren't any professional bands around Stockholm so not strange really if I come to think of it. Sometimes some freelacers put together a band but that will never be as good as to compete with this. The ones who play (over here) are semi professionals with occational gigs. We all have other jobs. It makes me sad. That old swing music is so much fun and joy. Modern big band is more about muscles and advanced lines and everybody sound more alike until a solo opens up. Can be fun too, but I like this more, can't help it. Maybe I'm getting old. That's what I think. Great clip!

I'll occasionally throw in a light, narrow, and fast vibrato like this when I'm playing lead. I've found that it indeed does depend a lot on the arrangement. Notice that the rhythmic integrity of the arrangement when they're in harmony: all 4 trombones are for the most part all playing exactly the same rhythm with very few inner voice motions. This makes it a lot easier to lock in vibrato as a section.

One of my favorite clips. LW caught a lot of grief for being cheesy but I enjoyed his program when it was originally broadcast and have continued to enjoy the re-runs on YouTube.
When the individuals take a solo it is very obvious how much difference there is in their sounds. Yet taken as a whole the result is beautiful.

Interesting to hear the remake of it! Heard the original pretty often since a few years I think. The remake is really good but what sticks out to me is that the articulations are more 'accurate' and pointy in the original. Short notes are super short, accents are stronger with the dynamic going back a lot more directly after the attack. Such a strong effect when everyone does it that way. But the remake is a great take on it as well and the sound and the vibrato of the remake are crazy good and authentic.
