Yet Another Bach 16 Question

Hey all. Picked up this Bach 16 from a forum member and wanted to know if you all can help me figure out which gooseneck it has.

The model listed on the slide and the bell is just “16”. The model 16 is a dual bore, but this one measured .509 on both top and bottom. I’ve read all the Bach 16 threads I found and learned a lot but not this.

How can I figure out which gooseneck it has?

It has the standard neckpipe, not the M neckpipe. Only 16M marked bells came with the M neckpipe from the factory. A tech could have modded it to an M neckpipe, but this is not a common thing and requires a couple new parts.

Best to assume its a stock small bore Bach neckpipe.

I concur with Benn.

The early 16m’s didn’t have the open neckpipe; only the slide was different from the 16.

I have one. 16m on the slide, 16 on the bell. I enjoy it very much.

I haven’t heard/read about any other horns with this configuration. I wonder if it was common.

It seems to play really well; but I’ll be on the lookout for a 16M to compare with.

Then it's an LT16M slide (though of course yours is not an M). It's the Watrous model before the M neckpipe. Not a normal 16!

You’re the only other person I’ve heard of with one. Thanks for the confirmation.

I like mine too. Similar to my 3B, but yet quite different. Still working on figuring out which one I like better in my big band.

I have been measuring neckpipes on every 16/16M coming through my hands. I measure the outside diameter of the pipe 1/2" from the top or bottom ferrule. The average top end measurement is 0.596". This is true for 16's and 16M's. The bottom end is 0.545" for the 16's and 0.558 for the 16M's. I have yet to find a bell marked 16 that has the larger 16M pipe.

The bottom end is 0.545" for the 16's and 0.558 for the 16M's.

Picked up my horn today and noticed that the slide appears to have a faint M under the Model 16. I feel a little foolish for missing that before.

The OD of the neck pipe, 1/2” above the bottom ferrule is: 0.542.
