Help on finding my King 606 manufacture date

Post by Makinatoran »

Hello, I've recently bought a King 606 for 195 dollars 2 months ago and everyone I have talked to thinks that I wasted my money, but I think it's nice at least as it's my first ever trombone. I tried finding out myself online, but I couldn't for the life of me find anything but a comment here about the serial numbers hitting 900000 in the 90s, so I assume I have something from the 70s-80s. The serial number is 869xxx. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Wasted your money?
Unless the horn is unplayable that's a great deal. I've known people that gigged on 606 trombones. Nice score.

I think the horn itself is in almost perfect condition, except for the lacquer, but really the only thing I wanted to look out for was the slide condition and it was really good!

That's a decent price for a solid horn. I picked up my similar vintage 606 a touch cheaper, but the slide isn't perfect. It's my beater horn for outdoor gigs; I wouldn't hesitate to take it to "real" performances if the slide were a bit smoother.

3 years ago (mid-pandemic) I picked up a King 606 (S/N 9775xx, so 1985), returned from the rental pool and refurbished by a good music store. I intended to give it to a needy student, but it plays so well that I'm (selfishly) hanging on to it for now!
