Has anyone tried the new Fedchock mouthpiece from Pickett?

You've asked this question before quite a while back..... Why don't you order one and then tell us all what it's like?
Go on take one for the team :clever:

Agreed!! But I’ll offer that I’m guessing John Fedchock loves it!!🤣

You can order one for me. I’m not interested in spending money in experimentation. I was hoping someone would have something to say about the piece.

It's a piece based off of John's 11C. I played the prototypes a while ago and actually liked all of them, even though they were all different. If you like 11Cs, this would be good to check out.

You know, I ask because I’m interested, not because I’m hoping to get a bunch of sarcastic comments. I already play any 11 C that’s been altered in the way Fedchock’s mouthpiece was done. it has also been skeletonized. In fact, I have two of them and I am working on a version of that mouthpiece that will be coming out eventually from Houser Mouthpieces. I simply wanted anybody’s opinion that might’ve tried one.

And how might John's mouthpiece have been altered?
Are there secrets and mystery behind it?

Of course. Pepe in NYC altered pieces for lots of trombonists such as Urbie, Fontana, and a host of others. It has to do with throat and backbone size and shapes and how that is opened up, and to what size. John himself says his original 11C was alterered, but he doesn’t say by who or when.

My pleasure - I wish I had more info for you - all I can say is the rim was very comfortable for me and the throat seemed perfectly matched to the cup size/depth. That match can be really hard to dial in, and finding a truly good Bach 11C with those agreeable dimensions are usually held on to, as we all know. John's is very much that, and has quite a bit provenance. I know he spent a lot of time and went through lots of versions dialing his piece in with Pickett.

I’ve just received the Pickett Fedchock 11c after quite a long wait and much anticipation!

My top list of similar sized pieces that I’m comparing to includes a great Bach MV 11c and MV 7c, my go to MV 6.5a (although it’s bigger), the Reeves 11c, the Ferguson 11, and a few others.

Where the Reeves 11C feels quite a bit bigger at the rim, the Fedchock definitely feels like an 11c on the face. Very comfy rim for this sized piece though, not too sharp feeling like some 7C and 11C pieces. I think they’ve really nailed the cup depth and throat, it blows very freely across the whole range and doesn’t back up on you like some other pieces (one of my criticisms of the Reeves at times). I’d say the blow and feeling of openness is similar to my MV 6.5a, which is hard to come across for something that also has the punch and sound in the upper register.

It’s a more even and stable sound than my MV 11c, and definitely has that vintage Bach depth and sparkle to the sound, whilst being fuller and more even. I’d say the Reeves 11c slightly wins out in terms of colour in the sound, but the Fedchock is close behind and wins on the blow.

I still need to run it through its paces in a few more performance situations, but it seems to do everything really well, from the smooth, velvety ballad sound, to punchy lead stuff.

Definitely check it out if you like 11Cs, it’s really well made and nice to know you don’t have to keep searching for that magic Bach!

I’ve been playing an altered 11 C which has the same inner dimensions as that Mouthpieces, but a skeletonized exterior since the 1980s you could not find a finer mouthpiece
