What is This Olds Trombone?

Post by DougHulme »

I think this is really a question for JohnL but I just saw this on ebay. Is it one of those student type Olds that someone sells or is it a proper Olds? If it is I dont recognise it, someone maybe playing with the engraving? Looks like its been polished and re-lacqured. No intention of buying, just curious. Whats the reference to 1912, is that when Olds started production? It clearly is not a 1912 antique! - Just curious

Pretty sure it's a parts horn. The bell engraving says mid-1920's (trombone playing bear but no "& Son") but the tenon joint is much newer (mid-1940's or later).

1912 is a patent date. No one knows for certain exactly when Frank Olds started building trombones; best guess is 1913 (based on a "14 years ago" reference in a catalog with a 1927 copyright.
