Lacquer Removal

Post by jackbasstrombone »

Anyone have any tips for removing lacquer from bells? I have a spare Conn bell and I want to remove the lacquer from the outside of the bell, but leaving the inside nice and shiny.

Some lacquers can be stripped with really hot water.
It will be difficult to isolate the inside bell, however.

With painter’s tape and 100% Acetone, you might get lucky.

I’ve used “Aircraft Stripper” and it has done great, but is expensive for this project alone.

For stubborn cases, I would use the yellow can of Easy Off oven cleaner. (Blue can is “fume-free” but I haven’t tried it) Outside. Toxic Fumes. It has worked on notoriously stubborn Eastlake Orange Epoxy lacquer from King Trombones. Spray. Let it scooch. Rinse with garden hose.
