78h is generally a 1920s - 1972 522 bore 8' bell, but the Spec could mean anything from a rose bell to an F attachment. Nice pro horns. Not everybody loves them. If it has a valve, it's probably a pre-1950s predecessor to the 79h. In that case it's probably worth more.

78h in good shape can go $1000+. 79h in very good condition $1200-1500.

Depends also if it's a collector or a player.

There are a lot of posts on the 78/79h here.

Of course pictures would help us identify it more precisely.

Thanks for the info. Mine needs some work, but will come up soon with some photos. It has an F attachement and is from 1932.

Oh, yeah. Several would like to get their hands on that one. You shouldn't have any problem selling it if it's in reasonable condition. Love to see pix!

Does anyone know when the .517 bore was switched to. 522 on the 78H?

Btw, I bought the one from meine at the beginning of this year and I'm still unsure what to do with it. At the current condition it wasn't really playable (at least not for me and two of my friends who tried it). Basically any note above tuning b-flat won't lock in and feels a bit like playing with an open spit valve (although this one is fine). My assumptions were either a broken stock leadpipe or the inner tubes having a tiny hole somewhere, or a combination of both. I brought it to Lätzsch last week and Mr Nienaber wants to check what could cause those problems. I actually like the sound of the horn in the lower register where it's somewhat playable.

I thought about investing some money in it and let Lätzsch do everything that makes this trombone from the current condition into a great condition, but that might cost at least approx. 1000 bucks with a decent new leadpipe, probably new inner tubes and some other minor things. Maybe it's gonna turn into a Lätzsch/Conn Frankenbone. Not sure about it yet tho. Going to call Mr Nienaber tomorrow to hear whether he was able to find something and what his suggestion would be. There's also still the chance of just selling it again to someone who wants to make this a great horn...
