This is the brainchild of one of my students. A sophomore no less. He had the idea, and asked Don Lucas and me to help him realize it. The Boston University School of Music has graciously agreed to host the facebook live event and help us promote it.

How would you like to learn from some of the best trombonists in the world from the comfort of your own home? Join us on May 16th and 17th for the first ever Virtual International Trombone Convention (VITCON). Further streaming and session details to follow!

Talks will be from Joao Luis Areias, Norman Bolter, Abbie Conant, Faustino Diaz, Chris Houlding, Carol Jarvis, Megumi Kanda, Gabe Langfur, Don Lucas, Jim Nova, Gabriele Malloggi, and Liza Malamut.

You don’t have to be a trombonist to reap the benefits of this convention. This is for all musicians! Learn about a variety of topics ranging from how to keep in shape when alone, freelancing, recording, recovering from injury, warming up, how to use imagination in your playing, creativity, and much more! If you’re serious about your music, you won’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity.

I believe you can watch a facebook live event without a facebook account. You probably can't comment or ask questions without one.

As a non-Facebooker, I'm familiar with the issues watching something on Facebook without an account. No you can't watch something like this if you're not signed up with FB. You can sometimes watch a link if you click on it very fast before FB locks you out, but then FB gets "smarter" so it locks you out even faster before you try the next link. It would be helpful for a lot of us if you guys post stuff on YouTube, even after the event. We did a similar thing with out local trombone event that we do every year during International Trombone week.

What’s the big deal about getting a FB account (other than making a deal with the devil?).

I might be inclined to drive for a couple of hours and get a hotel room for something like this. Creating a FB account temporarily doesn’t seem like an enormous price to pay.

I’m not big on FB. I don’t need to know what my friends are up to on their vacations, but it does keep me in touch with a couple of things I’m interested in, such as local trombone events.

Gotham Early Music Scene has run a few live shows through FB and made a point about mentioning that an account is not required. Works fine on my FB-less end.

Has a schedule/program for this event been posted?

Would it be possible for you to ask the organizer to see that any FB settings allowing non-members to view the broadcasts are set to 'on?'

I only caught part of Jimmy talking to Don Lucas, but one thing that stuck with me was Jimmy talking about getting his tail whupped by Blazhevich. I listen to that and think about all the kids who think you don't have to work on the basics if you want to play pop music. Nope. You gotta learn all that stuff whatever you want to play.

I've managed to watch much of the seminar - some live and some after the fact. Fantastic! So nice to get a bit of inspiration during such a tough time! I even managed to find a way to make Facebook work for a non-Facebooker with limited computer skills!

So much to unpack - so far, I was inspired by Megumi Kanda's talk and by Carol Jarvis' session as well. To hear their stories of recovery from adversity was timely. Jimmy Pankow's session was a "starstruck moment" for this long-time fan, and I would like to make your session mandatory viewing for any past, current and future students and colleagues! Demondrea Thurman's time was also great - so many ideas that I also try to teach, but expressed better than I've ever managed!

I'm hoping to watch the rest of the sessions tonight and over the rest of this week. Thanks to you and Don again for this event!
