I love that. Jay Friedman talks about being a low brass you already have a dark sound, don't make it worse by trying to make the sound darker. By comparison to the rest of the orchestra, trombones are already dark. Great insight that's contrary to a lot of what you hear today.

Seems like there is lots of bright, just that the bright that shows up is smack in the middle of someone else's fundamental range, like trumpets, saxes, and cymbals.

He's had one of the most successful careers in the history of the instrument, starting out with Buddy Rich, Don Ellis and working his ways into the lucrative Hollywood Studio scene. Join John Snell and Noah Gladstone as we interview Alan for about an hour about his early years, first gig on the road, Hoyt's Garage and what its like to be a freelancer playing for the pictures. It was one of our most favorite episodes and we're super excited to be publishing it today!

This week John Snell and Noah Gladstone interview valve trombonist, Barry Mosley Jazz Valve Trombonist!
Inspired by the great valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, Barry Mosley is keeping the legacy of playing jazz valve trombone alive. Barry moved to Los Angeles in 1989 from the California Bay Area to be involved in the great music scene in Los Angeles. Being mentored by two great trombonist Slyde Hyde and Bill Watrous, and performing many shows with the legendary Chet Baker.
