Tis the season to drink beer

Post by JLivi »

Now that the holiday season is here I was wondering if you had a winter/christmas beer that you enjoyed. Here are a few of my favorites.

Great Lakes Christmas Ale (cleveland)
Revolution Fistmas (chicago)
Spiteful Porter (chicago, not sure if this makes it out of Illinois)

What are you drinking this holiday season?

I just finished the last Great Lakes Christmas Ale I have been hoarding since 2018 and sadly missed out on 2019's batch.

Millstream is local to me and does a Chocolate Bock that I enjoy too. Time to pick up some to celebrate the season.

And New Glarus is always a great choice but two hour round trip to bootleg it back home.

And sadly Road Slush is not on the schedule for this round.

Oatmeal stout sounds good. I'm not too far from the wisconsin border, so next time I find myself up there I'll have to pick some up. I'm a New Glarus fan. I can't tell if that's because I can't get it in Illinois, or their beer is actually that good!

I had the Sam Adams Cold Snap a couple of weeks ago - didn't like it.

I was pleased that Short's Go Juice was a very solid IPA, although Short's makes a lot of great IPAs to go with some duds. I like their aggressiveness with experimentation. It's not specifically a "christmas" ale, but definitely has a "holiday" vibe.

Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA is a good choice. Or it was last year, anyway. Grabbed a six pack this year and I haven't been impressed. Maybe the 2nd six pack will be better...

12 Dogs of Christmas by the Thirsty Dog Brewery in Akron is supposed to be like Great Lakes Christmas Ale but a bit more subtle. It is still available. Not a fan of spiced beer myself, one a year does me. That said, my wife got me a beer making kit for our anniversary and I made a batch of a pretty good Pilsner. Rumor has it that Santa is bring me the stuff to make two gallons of Porter. Yum!

My introduction to "christmas ale" was via the glorious beer scene I enjoyed while living in Belgium several years ago. One of the consistent standouts was St. Feuillien - of course, they made a bunch of really great beers, not just their "Noel" ale. Alas, although St. Feuillien ales are available in the U.S., like pretty much all other Belgian imports, they don't really have the same 'presence' of flavor. Still good, though.

Stone Enjoy By 1/1/20 is incredible. More than worth the price of admission.

Totally disappointed with Anchor Steam this year. Too bad, their stuff all tastes like sour water to me.

Russian River brewing is getting a wider release, and while the Pliny is great, their single IPAs have been wonderful, as has their pale ale, "Great Beer, Great Wine."

North Coast "Old Rasputin" (Imperial Stout) is definitely in season. Make sure you brush your teeth after drinking it, before you play your horn though...

We have a local brewery- RJ Rockers, that makes some pretty good stuff. For better or worse, the older I get, the less beer I drink. I still have a few cans in the frig left over from my birthday cookout in August. About 2 -3 beers a week is plenty for me these days.

Since the last post the in-laws showed up with two 6-packs of GL Christmas Ale in hand. Waiting until they leave to enjoy it.
